Work with the space you have

We’ve all made the mistake of going shopping and being drawn in by a beautiful item that sadly, is just not perfect for the space we’re looking to design. That’s why, before you go rug shopping it’s important to measure the space you’re looking to fill and to keep the size and shape of this space in mind while you’re perusing rugs. By making sure you’re choosing a rug for that specific space you’ll get something which really compliments the room.

Think about the style you want

There are so many different styles of rugs around right now that the choice can be overwhelming. That’s why it’s important to do some research and choose a style that sits in harmony with everything else in the room.

Consider the best material

The beauty of rugs is they can add some real texture to a room, which is why choosing the right material is so important to getting the right rug for you. Rugs made from natural fibres tend to be more expensive than those made from synthetic fibres but they’re also more durable and likely to last longer. But if you have children or pets, synthetic fibre rugs are generally easier to clean which means it can make your life a whole lot easier if you think your new rug might experience daily dirt and spillages.

Do you want a patterned pile or a uniform colour?

Once you’ve decided what material you want your rug to be made from, the next step is to decide whether you want something patterned or a rug that is a solid colour. What works best will depend very much on the room you’re designing and your own individual style. If your walls and furniture are mostly decked out in solid colours you might want a distinctive patterned rug to catch your eye and focus it on the centre of the room. Alternatively, a solid colour rug can compliment patterned wallpaper and bring different elements together in a room without taking centre stage.

Don’t be afraid to layer different rugs together

When it comes to rugs, you don’t need to be afraid of having too many in one space. In fact, the right selection of rugs can really compliment one another. When selecting rugs to sit alongside each other, think about mix and matching different textures, colours, and patterns to get a distinctive range of styles that combine well.
